Do you ever feel like your system is about to crash?
It’s one of those days:high pressure, information overload, and endless notifications.
Your brain feels overheated, your thoughts are spinning, your shoulders are tight, and your heart is racing.
In moments like these, what we often need isn’t more analysis or problem-solving.
We need to help the body feel safe again, so we can return to the present moment.
In 2023, the Child Welfare League Foundation launched the Now Card,
a regulation card deck designed to support people find stability and connection through the body.
This year, we are taking it a step further:The Now Card characters are coming to life!
Our brand-new animated video transforms self-regulation concepts into six simple "magic" practices
that both children and adults can easily follow.
Why Start with the Body?
You might wonder:when we feel anxious or overwhelmed,
why focus on the body instead of trying to fix the problem?
From a trauma-informed perspective, when the brain senses potential threat, even without immediate danger,
the body may automatically shift into "Fight, Flight, or Freeze" response.
This is the autonomic nervous system doing its job to protect us.
However, if we remain in a state of heightened alert for too long,
it can leave us feeling exhausted, numb, disconnected, or unable to relax—no matter how hard we try.
This is why U.S. psychiatrist Dr. Bruce Perry emphasizes a simple but powerful sequence known as the
3R’s Model: Regulate → Relate → Reason
This model reminds us that we’re unlikely to connect well with others or think clearly until the nervous system has settled.
Regulation isn't about suppressing emotions;it’s about stabilizing the body so the brain can come back online.
From “Noise” to the “Now” in Just a Few Minutes
The video introduces Steve Haines’OMG Method,
designed to support moments of stress or emotional overload and guide the body back to stability:
O|Orient:
Gently sense your surroundings. Use your five senses to notice what is around you and reconnect with the present moment.
M|Move:
Gently move your body. As you move, place some attention on how your body feels in the moment.
Start with small movements to rebuild connection with your body.
G|Ground:
Ground yourself by feeling stability and support.
Use simple methods to sense your body, gradually moving from specific areas to the body as a whole.
Building on this framework, the video demonstrates six simple regulation practices.
These movements require no equipment and can be done almost anywhere—at home, in the classroom, or at work.
In just a few minutes, they send the body a clear message: I’m here. I’m safe.
Everyone Deserves to Live a Calm and Joyful Life
When we gently calm ourselves and step out of the loop of anxiety, we do more than just self-care.
We create a ripple effect. A grounded, stable "you" becomes a source of strength for others,
creating a safer and more supportive environment for everyone around you.
We invite you to take a few minutes for yourself.
Follow the animation, step by step, and guide yourself from "Noise" back to the "Now."
